Cosmo City, located to the north of Johannesburg, South Africa, is one of the country’s newer townships, established in the early 2000s to address the growing need for affordable housing in the region. Unlike many older townships, Cosmo City was designed as a mixed-income community with both low-cost and middle-income housing. As a result, it has developed into a diverse, vibrant area where businesses cater to a broad range of residents, from those seeking basic goods and services to those with more disposable income. The township has experienced rapid growth, with a population that has steadily increased as more people move into the area. This growth has given rise to a flourishing local economy, with numerous small and medium-sized businesses becoming integral to the community’s daily life.

The business landscape in Cosmo City is largely characterized by small-scale, informal businesses, with many entrepreneurs opening spaza shops, food vendors, hair salons, and other service-oriented businesses to meet the needs of residents. These businesses play a crucial role in providing affordable goods and services to the community, and they form the backbone of the township’s economy. In addition to these informal businesses, there has been a rise in more formal retail outlets and services as Cosmo City continues to grow. Chain stores like Shoprite, Spar, and Clicks have established a presence in the area, providing a wider range of consumer goods and attracting customers from surrounding areas. Additionally, larger shopping centers, such as Cosmo Mall, have emerged, offering retail, entertainment, and dining options, further enhancing the township’s business environment.

In addition to retail and consumer goods businesses, Cosmo City has seen growth in sectors such as construction and transportation. As the township continues to expand, construction businesses are in demand to build new homes, commercial spaces, and public infrastructure. The transport sector is also vital, with minibus taxis and bus services connecting Cosmo City to other parts of Johannesburg, facilitating the movement of residents for work, shopping, and other activities. Furthermore, Cosmo City has experienced a growth in professional services, such as education centers, health clinics, and financial institutions, reflecting the community’s increasing demand for services that support its development.

However, businesses in Cosmo City – and the community at large – face several challenges. Crime, unemployment, overcrowding, and a lack of digital infrastructure is hindering growth and development in the area.

It is against this backdrop that the Digital Township Economy (DTE) was established, with a mission to empower and equip community members – particularly the township youth and women between the age of 18 and 40 – with the digital skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly digital world: the eCommerce. With a growing need for a more inclusive economy, the DTE aims to provide access to resources, training, and opportunities that enable individuals in underserved communities to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.

The focus of the DTE is not just to teach digital literacy but to provide practical, hands-on skills in eCommerce. By equipping local entrepreneurs and job seekers with the knowledge to navigate the digital space, the DTE seeks to bridge the skills gap and reduce the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing economic opportunities.
